Despite strong opposition from President Donald Trump, Indian-origin Zehran Mamdani won the New York mayoral election and made history.
Sehar News/World: According to media reports, 34-year-old Democratic candidate Zehran Mamdani achieved a historic victory in the New York City mayoral election despite strong opposition from President Trump. He became the first Muslim mayor of the largest city in the United States.
Zehran Mamdani defeated 67-year-old former Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo, who had become an independent candidate after losing the party nomination to Mamdani.
According to CBS, Zehran Mamdani received 677,615 votes, securing 49.6% of the total votes, while Andrew Cuomo received 568,488 votes, accounting for 41.6% of the total votes cast. The third candidate, Curtis Silva, received 108,377 votes. Curtis Silva is affiliated with the Republican Party.
It is noteworthy that Donald Trump intervened in the final stages of the election campaign, labeling Mamdani as anti-Semitic.
